As the summer season draws to a close and the blackberries begin to turn a deliciously sweet purple, it’s a brilliant time of year to get out there and learn more about what nature can provide. You could try your hand at searching for seaweed or sign up for a cookery course and learn how to search for and cook wild herbs and flowers.

Things to do
Foraging feasts
As the seasons change, so does the forager’s menu. Make the most of nature’s larder with a private one-day course from Fat Hen Cookery. You’ll head out into wild West Cornwall to search for flowers, seaweed and wild herbs, before returning to your home or holiday let for an inspiring cookery class. The course includes a guide to foraging, refreshments, and preserves or pickles to take home. Find out more here.
Herbal medicine
Have you ever wanted to make your own herbal medicine? Book a sensory medicine workshop with the Apothecary Forager, AKA Ruth Weaver, and learn how to identify medicinal plants and prepare a specific medicine. This 2-hour workshop is held at the Newlyn Fermentary. Follow Ruth on Instagram for the latest workshop dates.
Wild foraging walks
West Cornwall is wild in the winter, but there are so many reasons to get out there. Join expert forager Rachel Lambert for a Wild Food Foraging Course and discover the variety of flavours waiting for you in the hedgerows along the coast path. Book a half day course and you can enjoy a gentle walk while filling your basket with edible plants. Courses often include delicious tasters, such as wild herb dips and cakes, plus plenty of recipe ideas. Bespoke foraging experiences are also available.
Places to Eat
Fermented goodness
Newlyn Fermentary uses the process of fermentation to transform produce from growers in West Penwith into kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut and more. You’ll find their cool fermentary in a former art gallery in Newlyn, where they also offer curious visitors workshops in lacto-fermentation and water kefir making. Find out more here.
