Things to do
Gin tasting
Have you ever tried squid ink gin? What about a spirit inspired by the Atlantic Ocean? Book a tour with Pocketful of Stones to hear their story, discover how their unique spirits are made and enjoy a sample or two. The distillery even offers miniatures for designated drivers to take home. Visit their website to book your 1hr tasting tour.
Winter vineyard tours
Polgoon produces award-winning sparkling wines, ciders and fruit juices. You could pop into the shop and buy a bottle or two, but for a deeper understanding of what they do, it’s worth booking a tour. In the winter months, the vineyard offers a slower pace of tour, during which you’ll explore the indoor production areas, learn about the grape varieties and try up to five different Polgoon products. You can check to see their current availability and book ahead here.
Foraging feasts
As the seasons change, so does the forager’s menu. Make the most of nature’s larder with a private one-day course from Fat Hen Cookery. You’ll head out into wild West Cornwall to search for flowers, seaweed and wild herbs, before returning to your home or holiday let for an inspiring cookery class. The course includes a guide to foraging, refreshments, and preserves or pickles to take home. Find out more here.
Half day rock fishing trip
In this half-day rock fishing trip, Justin at Hook & Cook will guide you to the best fishing spots in West Cornwall. He’ll show you how to use your lure and keep or release any fish you catch. With mackerel, pollock and sea bass found in the area, it’s a great way to find a new connection to the coast and your food. Find out more and book your experience here.
Seafood in Newlyn
The Tolcarne Inn is a historic maritime pub and notable foodie destination in Newlyn. Overseen by Head Chef Ben Tunnicliffe (who previously held a Michelin Star at The Abbey), the seafood-led menu makes the most of the restaurant’s harbourside location. The menu is impressive, but it’s still a pub with a cosy fire, where you can sit, enjoy a pint and bring your dog. Find out more here.
Places to Eat
Fish tasting menu
The Shore serves a pescatarian tasting menu with a Japanese influence. Chef Bruce Rennie sources fish fresh from Newlyn market and vegetables from local farms or his own garden when possible. This Penzance restaurant offers an intimate dining experience with just 14 seats, so pre-book your ticket to secure your place and enjoy the culinary adventure. Find out more
