One of the benefits of travelling to West Cornwall in the off-season is that most of the beaches are dog friendly (see current rules here). Your best friend is free to stretch their legs on the enormous white-sand beach at Sennen Cove and leap around in the shallows at Marazion.

Four-legged explorers are also welcome in most of the pubs in the area, as well as many of the self-catering cottages and hotels, but it’s always best to check with the venue before you travel.

Jubilee Pool

Dog Day Swim

Jubilee Pool is the UK’s largest seawater lido and it’s usually reserved for humans, but on the day before the pool is closed for its annual clean, they open it up to swimmers and their canine companions. This event usually happens in late October. Keep your eyes peeled for dog friendly events on their Facebook page.

South West Coast Path

Penzance to Marazion (Walk/Cycle)

You don’t need a car to have a coastal adventure in Penzance. This gentle 2.7-mile walk from Penzance to Marazion follows the recently upgraded coast path and enjoys views across Mount’s Bay to St Michael’s Mount (see route here).

While you’re gazing out at the water, it might surprise you to learn that below the waves lies the remains of an ancient forest. To bring this secret landscape to life, local artist Emma Smith has created a site-specific artwork, ‘Gwelen’. You will find her wooden ‘seeing sticks’ dotted along the coast path. The installation is accompanied by a podcast, which will introduce you to Emma Smith and her work.

Spring awakening

See Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens as it bursts back into life after winter. There are installations from renowned artists around every corner – from intriguing metal sculptures to the fascinating camera obscura. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a mindful moment, experience the changing seasons and enjoy the details of nature.

Tolcarne Inn

Seafood in Newlyn

The Tolcarne Inn is a historic maritime pub and notable foodie destination in Newlyn. Overseen by Head Chef Ben Tunnicliffe (who previously held a Michelin Star at The Abbey), the seafood-led menu makes the most of the restaurant’s harbourside location. The menu is impressive, but it’s still a pub with a cosy fire, where you can sit, enjoy a pint and bring your dog. Find out more here.
