If you’ve ever visited Mount’s Bay, home of St Michael’s Mount, it might surprise you to learn that beneath the waves lies the remains of an ancient forest. To bring this secret landscape to life, local artist Emma Smith has created a site-specific artwork, ‘Gwelen’. To find her wooden ‘seeing sticks’, join the section of the South West Coast Path that connects Marazion and Penzance. This unique installation is accompanied by a podcast, which will introduce you to Emma Smith and her work.

Visit St Michael’s Mount before April 2023 to see the Sheila Hichens Collection. Featuring more than 40 paintings from Newlyn School artists, it’s an insight into what life in Cornwall was like in the early twentieth century. Starting at The Summerhouse Gallery, wander down the main street to find Marazion Gallery, Market House Gallery, Out of the Blue and Studio Read – all of which are within less than a mile of each other. You could also visit Penn Boylan Ceramics (call or email first) and complete your day with a visit to ‘Gwelen’, the site-specific artwork on the coast path between Marazion and Penzance. Join Sea Moor Cornwall for a private Gyotaku workshop at artist Stevie’s home in Penzance. Gyotaku is a traditional Japanese method of fish printing developed by fishermen in the 1800s to record and honour the catch. Stevie uses fish and shellfish sourced sustainably from the shores of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly – and nothing goes to waste. At the end of the workshop, Stevie will clean, cook and present the fish beautifully for you to enjoy with a glass of fizz (or two!).
