Penzance Art Galleries and Museums
West Cornwall has welcomed some of the marquee name of the visual arts in the past century or so. Norman Garstin, Stanhope Forbes, Barbara Hepworth, Bernard Leach and Kurt Jackson have all been bewitched variously by our shores, moors and fishing culture.
You’ll discover scores of boutique Penzance art galleries, with window displays bringing splashes of colour to our streets, as well as showcase venues housing works by Victorian legends and the leading lights of contemporary visual arts. Further afield, there’s plenty to discover in St Ives, Newlyn and St Just.
It’s not just visual arts on offer, either – our museums delve into some fascinating aspects of Cornish history.

Penlee House Gallery and Museum
Morrab Road,
Penzance
TR18 4HE
Taking pride of place among Penzance art galleries, Penlee House is a fine Victorian building constructed in 1865 for the Branwell family. The park surrounding it was opened as a Second World War memorial garden, while the house became a museum.
Today, museum exhibits sit alongside an impressive art collection with works by members of the famous Newlyn School. One of the gallery’s most famous paintings is “The Rain it Raineth Every Day” by Norman Garstin, which depicts waves and rain whipping across walkers on Penzance Promenade
You can also grab a cup of team and slice of cake at the Orangery Cafe, at Penlee House.

Newlyn Art School
The Old Board School, Chywoone Hill, Newlyn, Penzance TR18 5AW
